With the dortmund-project the Economic Development Agency Dortmund is providing targeted support for the future sectors of the economy. Besides micro and nanotechnology, logistics, and information technologies biotechnology ranks among these sectors. This dynamic sector significantly contributes to the formation of new jobs and constitutes a pillar of competitive production. In the last years, with its innovative R&D institutions, upcoming technology enterprises and joint projects, which are unique in Germany, Dortmund has emerged as one of the leading locations in biotechnology in Germany as well as in Europe. An annually increasing number of innovative biotechnology firms benefit from the excellent sectoral infrastructure. The “BioTrends 2008: SusChemEng-Conference for Sustainable Biochemical and Chemical Engineering” with many renowned national and international scientists is an ideal platform for the scientific as well as the business community to present the new perspectives for the sustainable biotechnology. For the transfer of the research results to the industry for the further development into marketable products and services provides incentives for growth and employment. In an ever faster changing world, we are facing an urgent need for sustainable production technologies. These require fundamental new concepts in engineering, biochemistry, and biotechnology. The “BioTrends 2008: SusChemEng-Conference for Sustainable Biochemical and Chemical Engineering” brings together competence and experts from academia and industry on an international platform in Dortmund on November 5 th to 6 th 2008. Main objectives comprise discussions, interactions, funding, and future collaborations at the interfaces of disciplines. From coal, steel, and beer to a thriving centre of future technologies: We are looking forward to welcoming you in Dortmund for an exciting and stimulating two-day symposium on Sustainable Biochemical and Chemical Engineering!
